Normal cholesterol, but has anyone checked your fasting insulin?

A cholesterol panel can come back looking great while your insulin has been running high for years, and most routine checkups never look at it. In a 1996 study in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers followed a large group of men without diabetes for five years. 114 of them had a first heart event, which meant chest pain, a heart attack or death. They compared those men to matched men who stayed healthy, with the same age, weight, smoking and drinking, and high fasting insulin stood out as its own risk factor for heart disease. That's why I think fasting insulin belongs in the conversation with your doctor, right next to the cholesterol numbers you already get. It's a simple blood test, and it can show you a problem long before your blood sugar does. Study: Despres JP et al., N Engl J Med 1996, PMID 8596596. Let's get healthy together.
