Non-violence is Still Violence

Is non-violence good? Flattening small violences to zero is a gateway to harm, but obviously, the goal isn’t to jump in the opposite direction and do a bunch of harm either. This video describes how I attempt to thread the needle and find a description of the situation that minimizes harm, instead of just erasing it. The first part is explaining how action is a distribution of risk, and how not everything is about the outcome you hoped for. After that it is talking about the harm you cause if you ignore that. The next sections are talking about how non-violence impacts how you can do resistance, and how I would rather yall think about things. But overall the answer to “should I be non-violent” is going to be that I don’t think it is a good framework to use in the first place. I don’t think minimizing violence is negative, but I do think we need to actually think about what that means.
