<description>Pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) is usually blamed on genes alone. Two studies out of Finland suggest blood sugar hormones may be part of the picture too. Men who started balding before age 35 were more likely to have high insulin, belly fat, high blood pressure and poor cholesterol than men the same age with full hair. In 324 Finnish women, high fasting insulin went with about 65% higher odds of significant hair loss. This is a link, not proof that insulin causes hair loss. It does make thinning hair a good reason to ask your doctor for a fasting insulin test, since insulin can run high for years before glucose looks off. Have you noticed this pattern in people you know? Let's get healthy together. Science, not medical advice.
